What do we mean by relationship-building?
When we talk about the competency of relationship-building in the world of business, we are referring to building strong relationships with partners and clients – about using interpersonal skills to network in an effective way.

What does a competent relationship-builder do?
Somebody who is competent at relationship-building focuses on understanding the needs of the client and getting the best possible results. This competency promotes an ethic of client service and so an understanding and anticipation of a client’s changing needs is essential. Stress and conflict are other issues that a competent relationship-builder will manage – keeping composed and acting as mediator when conflicts arise.

How can I start to develop the competency of relationship-building?
First identify the business plan goals of your department and decide what your role is going to be in helping to achieve those goals. You will need to study the business plan and learn as much as possible about your clients’ activities, interests and needs. This information might be available in their own annual reports or in client surveys conducted by your company. Talking to your clients about how you can best meet their needs is also a sensible first step to take.

Seven steps to becoming an effective relationship-builder:
1, Draw up a plan of what you need to do in order to give your clients what they want. Discuss your ideas with your line manager and then do what is necessary to implement the plan.
2, When the plan has been set in motion, schedule regular meetings with your line manager to review the progress that you are making and make any necessary adjustments.
3, When you are working as part of a team or group within a department or a company it is important to assess your contribution to the group’s work. Think about how your efforts help or hinder progress.
4, Make a weekly analysis of your commitments. Set yourself a goal for each week so that you follow them through. Make an effort to do what you say you are going to do – and also, to do it by the time that you say it will be done. If you get into the habit of doing this it will become like second nature.
5, Build up a file of contacts and classify them in a way that is meaningful for your particular work context. Then you will know exactly who to call with any queries or when you need information.
6, Don’t just wait for feedback to come to you, request it from a variety of sources – from your line manager but also from colleagues, clients and people who you supervise. Listen to what they have to say and act accordingly.
7, Build informal relationships with the people who are working around you. Make a point of greeting people who you normally don’t speak to. Ask them about their interests and make it a goal to practise small talk with them. Listen to what they say and remember so that you can ask about a particular interest the next time you meet.

I’ve read it in MICE NET ASiA Magazine and impressed with story by David Hall so I share you his opinion about Marketing for the MICE Sector.
Davel Hall argues hundreds of thousands of marketing dollars are being wasted because people aren’t doing their homework.
Remember the days when it was thought that one measurement of success in participating as an exhibitor at a trade show was by the number of sales and promotional brochures that were given away? Notwithstanding the fact that up to 80 or 90 per cent of those brochures didn’t make it much further than the rubbish bins on the perimeter of the exhibition hall didn’t seem to be noticed.
With the incredible acceleration of information technology over the past two decades one would think that such wastage of time and effort’ in trying to reach potential clients and business would have been diminished or at least brought under control. Certainly there is now a huge saving in the paper once used for such literature but unfortunately we now have wastage of another kind which is equally unproductive for the disseminator and can be very annoying to the majority of the recipients, especially if the message has absolutely we now have wastage of another kind which is equally unproductive for the disseminator and can be very annoying to the majority of the recipients, especially if the message has absolutely no relevance to their specific business interests.
I am talking about the incredible proliferation of unsolicited – call it spam if you like e-mails received after you attend an exhibition. These primarily come from the majority of the show’s exhibitors who attempt to draw your attention to their websites. The implication is that if you were a visitor to the exhibition then it is assumed you are a prospective user of the goods, services, destinations, facilities being offered by the show’s exhibitors.
Obviously the source of the exhibition visitors’ email contact details must come from the database of the exhibition/show organizing company which is perceived by the sellers as an additional welcome level of support. However, it is patently obvious that many of the exhibitors are simply not doing their research and assessing if the proposed recipients will in fact have any use or demand for what they are bring offered. In other words, we end up with a blanket email broadcast or mail out which is the lazy way out, and quite frankly somewhat unprofessional. The response from the exhibitors I can hear now will be that’s those who do not wish to be included in such future ‘broadcasts” simple need to hit the “unsubscribe” button at the foot of the message or advise the exhibition organizer that they do not wish to receive literature of any kind of from exhibitors. Simple yes, but the key point being missed is that to succeed in the highly competitive meeting s and events market requires an absolute commitment to a pragmatic and systematic approach.
Indeed, after nearly 40 years in the events industry almost exclusively as a destination marketer I have seen some incredible advancements and the emergence of some very talented people serving the many elements of the MICE or business events sector. Unfortunately there are still a number of individuals who simple do not fully understand the special strategies imperative for success.
Unfortunately, by bundling together the various ‘activities; that go to make up what is known as the MICE market in Asia, there are too many people with te erroneous assumption that the required marketing strategies must, therefore, bu similar for each segment. Wrong.
Exacerbating this problem is that there are many egos at play in this exciting and challenging industry of ours, and as a result ‘size of effort’ becomes more important than a logical, common sense, cost effective assessment of market potential by boring but absolutely essential qualifying research in the first instance.

In conclusion, here is an example by way of a short case study which clearly demonstrates the point I am making about talking a common-sense approach in maximizing your marketing activity in the business events and MICE markets.
A highly respected and successful facility with meeting and exhibition space located adjacent to a substantial number of hotel rooms decided to do a mass mailing of 7500 high quality brochures. The total cost was approximately USD $70,000 which included design, printing and distribution. After the project had been completed, management questioned the ‘investment’ and asked that an independent audit be carried out to assess the effective response of the project. First question asked of the facility by the auditor was “did you use your database?’
The response was yes, but then admitted they used their “mailing list’. In other words, they literally mailed out the impressive and expensive brochure to everyone in their mailing list. As you can imagine this embraced a pretty diverse range of interests.
After several months of research the findings showed that less than 20 people – yes 20 people – of the 7500 who received the sales literature said it welcomed receiving the brochure and would keep it in mind for the future but they had no immediate need or prospect to use the facility and destination concerned.
I think one could have reached this outcome for a lot less than USD 70,000 by taking the aforementioned essential pragmatic and systematic marketing approach in the first instance.

Will Power and Self Discipline

Sometimes, you wish to go for a walk, knowing how good it is for your health and how wonderful you feel afterwards, yet, you feel too lazy, and prefer to watch TV instead. You might be aware of the fact that you need to change your eating habits or stop smoking, yet, you don’t have the inner power and persistence to change these habits.

Does this sound familiar? How many times have you said, “I wish I had will power and self discipline”? How many times have you started to do something, only to quit after a short while? We all have had experiences like these.

Everyone possesses some addictions or habits they wish they could overcome, such as smoking, excessive eating, laziness, procrastination or lack of assertiveness. To overcome these habits or addictions, one needs to have will power and self discipline. They make a great difference in everyone’s life, and bring inner strength, self mastery and decisiveness.

Definitions of Will Power and Self Discipline
Will power is the ability to overcome laziness and procrastination. It is the ability to control or reject unnecessary or harmful impulses. It is the ability to arrive to a decision and follow it with perseverance until its successful accomplishment. It is the inner power that overcomes the desire to indulge in unnecessary and useless habits, and the inner strength that overcomes inner emotional and mental resistance for taking action. It is one of the corner stones of success, both spiritual and material.

Self-discipline is the companion of will power. It endows with the stamina to persevere in whatever one does. It bestows the ability to withstand hardships and difficulties, whether physical, emotional or mental. It grants the ability to reject immediate satisfaction, in order to gain something better, but which requires effort and time.

Everyone has inner, unconscious, or partly conscious impulses, making them say or do things they later regret saying or doing. On many occasions people do not think before they talk or act. By developing these two powers, one becomes conscious of the inner, subconscious impulses, and gains the ability to reject them when they are not for his/her own good.

These two powers help us to choose our behavior and reactions, instead of being ruled by them. Their possession won’t make life dull or boring. On the contrary, you will feel more powerful, in charge of yourself and your surroundings, happy and satisfied.

How many times have you felt too weak, lazy or shy to do something you wanted to do? You can gain inner strength, initiative and the ability to make decisions and follow them. Believe me, it is not difficult to develop these two powers. If you are earnest and are willing to become stronger, you will certainly succeed.

In this article you will find some exercises and techniques for developing these abilities. These simple, but effective exercises, can be performed everywhere and at any time. Go slowly and gradually, and you will see how you get stronger and your life start improving.

There is a misconception in the public mind regarding will power. It is erroneously thought to be something strenuous and difficult, and that one has to exert and tense the body and mind when expressing it. It is a completely wrong concept. This is one of the reasons why people avoid using it, though they are conscious of its benefits. They acknowledge the fact that the employment of will power in their life and affairs will greatly help them, and that they need to strengthen it, yet they do nothing about it.

Will power gets stronger by holding back and not allowing the expression of unimportant, unnecessary and unhealthy thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions. If this saved energy is not allowed expression, it is stored inside you like a battery, and it becomes available at the time of need. By practicing appropriate exercises, you develop your powers the same way, as a person who trains his/her muscles in order to strengthen them.

Developing Will Power and Self Discipline
An effective method for developing and improving these abilities is to perform certain actions or activities, which you would rather avoid doing due to laziness, procrastination, weakness, shyness, etc. By doing something that you do not like doing or are too lazy to do, you overcome your subconscious resistance, train your mind to obey you, strengthen your inner powers and gain inner strength. Muscles get stronger by resisting the power of the barbells. Inner strength is attained by overcoming inner resistance.

Remember, strengthening one of these abilities, automatically strengthens the other one.

Here are a few exercises:
1) You are sitting in a bus or train and an old man or woman, or a pregnant lady walks in. Stand up and give up your seat even if you prefer to stay seated. Do this not just because it is polite, but because you are doing something that you are reluctant to do. In this way you are overcoming the resistance of your body, mind and feelings.

2) There are dishes in the sink that need washing, and you postpone washing them for later. Get up and wash them now. Do not let your laziness overcome you. When you know that in this way you are developing your will power, and if you are convinced of the importance of will power in your life, it will be easier for you to do whatever you have to do.

3) You come home tired from work and sit in front of the T.V. because you feel too lazy and tired to go and wash. Do not obey the desire to just sit, but go and have a shower

4) You may know your body needs some physical exercise, but instead you keep on sitting doing nothing or watching a movie. Get up and walk, run or do some other physical exercise.

5) Do you like your coffee with sugar? Then for a whole week decide to drink it without sugar. You like to drink three cups of coffee each day? For a week drink only two.

6) Sometimes, when you want to say something that is not important, decide not to say it.

7) Don’t read some unimportant gossip in the newspaper, even if you want to.

8) You have a desire to eat something not too healthy. For the sake of the exercise refuse the desire.

9) If you find yourself thinking unimportant, unnecessary, negative thoughts, try to develop lack of interest in them, by thinking about their futility.

10) Overcome your laziness. Convince yourself of the importance of what is to be done. Convince your mind that you gain inner strength when you act and do things, in spite of laziness, reluctance or senseless inner resistance.

Never say that you cannot follow the above exercises, because you certainly can. Be persistent no matter what. Motivate yourself by thinking about of the importance of performing the exercises, and the inner power and strength you will gain.

Trying to attempt too many exercises when you are still a beginner, might end in disappointment. It is better to start with a few easy exercises at first, and then gradually increase their number and move to the more difficult exercises.

Most of these exercises can be practised anywhere and at anytime, and you don’t have to devote special times for them. They will train and develop your inner strength, enabling you to use it whenever you need it.

If you practice weight lifting, running or aerobics, you strengthen your muscles, so that when you need to move or carry something heavy for example, you have the strength for it. By studying French each day, you will be able to talk French when you travel to France. It is the same with will power and self-discipline; by strengthening them, they become available for your use whenever you need them.

If for the sake of an exercise, you stop doing something that you usually do, and overcome the inner resistance concerning it, you may resume doing it, if it is not harmful. For example, if you love drinking orange juice, and for the sake of an exercise you switch to drinking apple juice, after doing so for some time and after it makes no great difference to you, you may go back to drinking orange juice, if you still like it. The point here is to develop inner strength, not making life difficult for you or continue doing things you don’t like to do.

Benefits of Possessing Strong Will Power and Self Discipline
You need these skills to control your thoughts, improve your concentration, and to become the boss of your mind. The stronger these skills are, the more inner strength you possess.

Being the master of your mind you enjoy inner peace and happiness. External events do not sway you, and circumstances have no power over your peace of mind. This might sound too unreal for you, but experience will prove to you that all the above is true.

These skills are vital for achieving success, they give you more control over your life, help you change and improve habits, and are essential for self improvement, spiritual growth and meditation.

Practice the exercises presented here earnestly and persistently, and your life will start changing.
